Surfing Queensland Boardriders Clubs December E-Newsletter

Welcome

Welcome to the December edition of the Surfing Queensland Boardriders Clubs E-Newsletter.

December  has seen a welcome improve in surf conditions, and as the festive season is fast approaching, we at Surfing Queensland would like to thank all of the people who have worked so hard in 2011 to ensure the continued success and development of our Queensland Boardriding Club. We must acknowledge in particular all of the volunteers who are the backbone of our Clubs, and who’s time and efforts have not gone unnoticed, thank you very much!

Congratulations to our Club Champions for 2011 and hope everyone is getting into some fantastic Christmas parties to celebrate whats been a very eventful year. The Boardriders ‘Club Coaching Program’ is now in full swing for some Clubs, and we are looking for Clubs to get more involved in 2012 where we will again have funding for a Club coach to roll out regular coaching sessions. If you need more information on this program, just contact your regional Club Development Officer.

Surfing Queensland’s Facebook page continues to grow in popularity, as a great tool to keep abreast of all things surf related.  This month also saw some great opportunities for Clubs to get a head start on 2012 though applying for the Divisional Council Donations, so fingers crosses for some funding to come our way in early 2012.

As we move into the festive season, it is most importantly that Clubs complete their 2012 affiliation and insurance forms that have been sent to your Club committee, so that we can organize from our end that all Clubs are completely covered and ready to go for the summer!

As always, hope you enjoy this edition of the Surfing Queensland E-Newsletter.
The Surfing Queensland Office will close on Friday Dec 23, and re-open on Jan 4th.

Merry Christmas!

Education and Training

Club Coaching Program

Clubs recently were introduced to a new ‘Club Coaching Program’ whereby Club coaches will now be able to receive financial support from Surfing Queensland in fulfilling their roles.  The focus of this initiative from Surfing Queensland, is to entice and support the role of a designated and qualified Club coach throughout Queensland Clubs, to continue developing our surfing talent, as well as provide a pathway and employment opportunities for those Club members considering a career as a professional coach.  Many Clubs have taken advantage of this opportunity already, so please get in touch with your regional Club Development Officer if you need more information, or want to begin this program in your Club. If your Club has already began rolling-out this program, remember your first lot of reporting is due prior to Jan 1st. This reporting process is very simple and just requires Clubs to state the dates of your completed Coaching sessions along with the 10(min) names of the surfers who participated in each coaching session in the below template.

http://www.surfingqueensland.com/clients/U5BB01BEVC/monthlyparticipationreport.xls

If you’re Club has intentions to initiate this Program in 2012, please get in touch with your regional Club Development Officer to find out how to get started.

Judging

A Gold Coast judging accreditation course will be scheduled for early 2012, so keep an eye on the Surfing Queensland website or facebook for information on the announcement of this course.

A reminder also to any Club members who participated in the recent Level 1 Judging Courses, that there is an opportunity to fulfil your shadow judging requirements at upcoming  Surfing Queensland sanctioned events.  Just contact your regional Club Development Officer for more information.

Coaching

The final Level 1 Coaching Accreditaion course for 2011 was held at Tallegudgera recreation camp on Dec 10 - 11.  A fantastic turn out of dedicated coaches participated in the course held by surfing legend Eddie Valadares.  A great weekend was had by all, and even a few little waves for everyone to have some fun on.  This hugely popular course which is the leading accreditation course in the world for producing quality surf coaches will again be offered in early 2012. For details of the next course, keep an eye on the Surfing Queensland website and Facebook.  Congratulations to all those who completed the course.

Grants

Hints and Tips – Do’s and Don’ts of Grant Writing
Increase your potential for success when writing grant applications by taking into consideration the following suggestions:

  • Know the rules – stick to grant guidelines i.e. template, font, folders etc
  • Establish from the start an open, honest relationship with the funding body – 2-way communication is required, what do they need and how can you help them?
  • Develop a genuine relationship, ask questions.
  • Don’t scattergun – avoid forwarding an old/same application to lots of different funding bodies, treat each funding source as a person/personality.
  • What’s your unique selling point?
  • Every application is different.
  • Don’t leave anything blank.
  • Keep the reader in mind - endless words are boring, break up with pictures (your own images) where possible use tables and graphs.
  • Cover page – unique, punchy, stand out, professional.
  • Keep answers simple, concise – no jargon/acronyms.
  • Keep layout simple, consistent and logical – dot points, easy to read tables.
  • Be outcomes/results focused.
  • Back up with statistics that are sourced - “we have the best service” is better written as “according to our annual visitor survey in 2008/09, 80% of our visitors rated us as having either good or very good service” (see Appendix 2 for survey results).

Grant Update
Active Inclusion Program update

Feedback from the Department of Communities regarding Active Inclusions Applications is that Clubs will most likely receive notification from their Local Council Member in the first week of January as to the success of thier applications.  Once you're club is notified, please contact the Surfing Queensland office immediately so that we can begin taking numbers for rolling out coaching and judging courses etc.

Fingers crossed for some late Christmas cheer!

Grant Opportunities for 2012
As we near the end of the year, our Boardriders Clubs are in a great position to put in place a basic strategic plan for 2012.  This planning process will help identify areas or projects which will potentially align with one or a number of the following grant opportunities, including:

Operations and Governance

Boardriders Clubs 2012 Affiliation
It is great to see that the majority of our Boardriders Clubs have re-affiliated with Surfing Queensland for 2012!   However, there are still a few Clubs who are yet to submit their completed affiliation form and accompanying payment.

By affiliating through your state association, your Club is eligible to reap the benefits of being involved in a state and national framework.  These benefits include; comprehensive insurance cover, access to state and federal funding opportunities, organised competition structure plus a host of other ‘value ads’!  Further, it is extremely important for all Boardriders Clubs to re-affiliate prior to December 25, 2011 to ensure the Club’s activities continue to be covered by their insurance policy.  Your Club’s current insurance cover is set to expire as of January 1, 2012.

Club ‘Sign-On’ Days and Membership Databases
Most Clubs will be hosting their Club ‘sign-on’ days early next year.  This is a great opportunity to welcome new comers and reacquaint existing members to the benefits of being associated with their local Boardriders Club.

It is extremely important to keep an accurate, up-to-date database of your current membership.  This is not only a requirement of your Club’s Constitution, but also an important part of your current insurance obligations.  Furthermore, an up-to-date database can be a very valuable reporting tool that will assist your Club when approaching sponsors, applying for grants, meeting insurance protocol, helping pinpoint areas within the Club that may need attention as well as providing your Club with a benchmark each year that can be compared with previous periods.

Surfing Queensland is requesting that each Club forward an up-to-date membership database to their respective CDO’s as soon as possible, following their Club’s ‘sign-on’ day at the start of next year.

To assist your Club with this process, Surfing Queensland has developed a 2012 Boardriders Clubs Membership Database template to help capture the information required.  The fields in this spreadsheet highlighted in yellow are mandatory.  The remaining fields, highlighted in grey are optional.  To download this template, visit: http://www.surfingqueensland.com/clients/U5BB01BEVC/database.xls

Surfing Australia Boardriders Clubs Operations Manual

Committee Handovers
As the New Year approaches, some Clubs will experience a turnover of committee members.Without proper procedures in place, years of hard work can simply walk out the door with the outgoing position.  It is essential therefore that Clubs manage this process appropriately to ensure that valuable information and knowledge is not lost every time someone moves on.

A useful ‘checklist’ for information and/or job handovers is:

  • Inform all new committee members of what their job involves as well as their responsibilities.  Personal briefings from the previous office holder may be useful.
  • Ensure your Club provides written job descriptions to all committee members.
  • Ensure a senior official briefs the new committee about the Club, its history and its plans for the future.  This could be backed up by a written plan.
  • Welcome new committee members and encourage them to contribute.
  • Know where all of the Club’s ‘legal’ documents are kept and have ready access to them.

For more information on the above topic refer to page 14 and 15 of Surfing Australia’s Boardriders Clubs Operations Manual.  If you haven’t already received a copy of this publication, please contact Surfing Australia by phone on 07 5599 3800 or via email info@surfingaustralia.com to arrange a copy to be forwarded to your Club.

The 2012 Surfing Queensland Events Calendar is again bursting at the seems, and will be available to Club committees via the Surfing Queensland Quarterly Magazine in the first week of January, and posted on the Surfing Queensland website.

There is a number of new additions to the official events calendar for 2012 though the introduction of more Club Specialty Events, the Coast of Origin Interclub series, and some fantastic grommet and junior events including the Billabong World Junior Championship being announced to be held at Burleigh Heads on Jan 20 -29.

Well done to all surfers who represented Queensland so well at the titles.

WAHU Surfer Groms Comp

Snapper Rocks Surfrider Keanu Miller added another feather to his cap at the 2011 WAHU Surfer Groms Comp held at Palm Beach on the Gold Coast , taking out the U/11 Boys division.

Throwing caution to the wind, Miller posted a combined two-wave heat score of 13.50 (out of a possible 20) to leap frog Eli Carr (Crescent Head, NSW – 8.90 points), Kaya Horne (Burleigh Heads, Qld – 8.60 points) and Kai Dobbyn (Palm Beach, Qld – 6.76 points).

Angourie’s (NSW) Chris Zaffis couldn’t hide his excitement posting big scores to dominate the blue ribbon U/15 Boys division.

Rip Curl Gromsearch National Finals

The 2011 Rip Curl GromSearch was held in tricky conditions on the Sunshine Coast today at Coolum Beach. HIroto Arai from Japan had an epic battle with Cronulla’s Chris Robertson (NSW) in the final of the blue ribbon division of the under 16 boys, swapping the lead several times, before both surfers finished with one of their best rides inside the last minute of the 20 minute decider.

In what quickly developed into a two-horse race, Hiroto and Robertson left Mitch Parkinson (Coolangatta, Qld) and Kai Hing (Wurtulla, Qld) in their wake as they fought for the win.

It all came down to the last 60 seconds when the Japanese surfer nailed a clutch wave to the beach and then had to wait on the shoreline whilst Robertson dismantled the very next wave.

The two surfers and the crowd anxiously awaited the judge’s decision which went to the Arai for a 14.84 two-wave tota (out of a possible 20)l ahead of Robertson’s 13.73 (out of a possible 20).

Hiroto was humble in victory and paid tribute to the standard of competition at the event.

In a similar situation to the boys Stephanie Single(Lennox Heads) was pushed to the line by Sunshine Coaster Isabella Nichols (Coolum Beach, Qld) and had to fend off the local challenger right to the end.

Nichols caught a wave with under a minute remaining and fell an agonising 0.47 of a point short of achieving the win. Alyssa Lock (Tweed Heads, NSW) and Kiani Dobbyn (Palm Beach, Qld) were left in third and forth respectively as they searched for a solid back up score.

Both winners not only claimed the Rip Curl GromSearch – Sunshine Coast, presented by Telstra crown ahead of their peers, but also secured entry into the coveted Rip Curl GromSearch National final.
They joined the winners of the previous five Rip Curl GromSearch events from around the country in an attempt to win the National title and receive an invite to the International Final held during the world famous Rip Curl Pro event at Bells Beach in Easter 2012.

Hiroto Arai was awarded the Air Asia Wave of the Day for his clutch 8.17 point ride in the final that ultimately gave him the win.

Isabella Nichols was awarded the Telstra performance award for a sterling run in the final that fell just short of ultimate victory.

Official results, Rip Curl GromSearch event number 6 of 6, Coolum Beach.
